    setting up ubuntu for ftp/ssh

I have a laptop running windows and a desktop running Ubuntu 12.10 and I'm looking to be able to set the desktop up to run as a server. I've seen stuff about installing different stuff like Apache on Ubuntu and using it as a server like that but all of it is very fuzzy to me.

Is anyone able to give or provide an in-depth or step by step guide with reasons on how to set this up?

Not to overwhelm you but here is the link to the server Guide https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/
and a good guide for setting up SSH which is pretty easy
    https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/server...sh-server.html
    and one for Firewalls http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1876124
    and Basic Security https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BasicSecurity
I dont use or believe in ftp so I wont comment on setting it up, just personal preferences.
