mutt mail notifications?

I've set up mutt with my gmail IMAP account. Is there any way I can get mail notifications, preferably without having mutt open.
I tried mail-notifications, but I didn't know how to use it with mutt. Instead, it sent me directly to my online gmail account. I'm using ubuntu 12.10.
