My searches have failed. I cannot remember any keywords. There was a great post with a long list describing applications and repositories that should be added to a new Ubuntu install. Anyone remember?

Make sure all of your packages are up to date using the Update utility. Then add your additional packages.

In a terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
