vlc sound crackling?

So in VLC videos tend to crackle where as Totem doesn't?

I have tried changing audio output but it's the same on Pulse, Alsa and OSS.

Any idea what else might cause it?

I think you can download a newer version of VLC (and compile) to rule out that it would have anything to do with the specific version of VLC which comes with the version of Ubuntu that you're currently using.
