    Exclamation 12.10 x64 - Lenovo E420s - RTL8188CE - Slow/Unstable Connection

Hey there! I've had a heck of a time with Ubuntu on my Lenovo E420s. Everything runs very well, except my wireless connection. Sometimes, it is unstable and doesn't connect (rare), and the rest of the time, it's extremely slow (compared to wireless performance on Windows). I've done a ton of research on this topic, and have finally given up trying to solve this on my own (after doing something that made my computer believe that it didn't have any wireless capabilities) - I am clearly out of my league on this one. I just reinstalled Ubuntu last night, so we're working with a pretty clean installation. I've provided all relevant information below, and hopefully I'll learn something in the process of making my wireless card work better!

    Computer: Lenovo E420s
    Operating System: 12.10 x64bit
    Wireless Card: Realtek - RTL8188CE

Previous attempts: I've tried installing most of the linux versions of the drivers that I've found off of Realtek's website, but that's how I broke my last installation (I probably installed the wrong one, and don't know enough to know how to undo it). From what I can tell, many people with the same wireless card as me, have the same issue. And it only seems to be the 64-bit users that still have the problem after installing the correct drivers. I'm not sure if it's an issue with 32-bit vs. 64-bit, but I'd like to try and make it work with this 64-bit installation before I try installing a 32-bit version of Ubuntu.

So you can gauge it, it's taking me about 30 minutes to download a 58.2MB file, I can't watch a YouTube video without having to pause it in the background for a long time to buffer, and I can't even browse Facebook while downloading files.

This is probably the coward's way out but if you need functioning wireless NOW, you could consider a USB adapter known to work. It's not a bad idea to have one of those in your toolkit anyway. For instance, I have a TrendNet TEW-424UB v.3.1 using a RealTek 8187B chipset. It's slow, bulky and ugly but plug it in and it works -- every time. It may take a while to get the 8188CE working reliably with the built-in driver. My 8188Cus has just started to be reasonably reliable with the built-in driver. Until recently it would be recognized but wouldn't connect.

Well, it is recognized, and it does work-ish. I forgot to mention that every few seconds to every few minutes, I'll have to disconnect and then reconnect in order to get it to work. If it won't load a page, I go up to the wireless icon and click on the network name, and then it will toggle connectivity and I'll have internet until the next time it drops (rather quickly). It is extremely frustrating.

I wouldn't consider that as working. It sounds like it's working much like the 8188Cus did until recently. The 8188Cus is still not perfect, but it's better than it was. I wish I was able to make a constructive suggestion. Maybe one of the gurus will chip in. One thought - do you have backports - or whatever they're called now - enabled? That should get you the most recent wireless updates.

I got a fix for that...

Go out to RealTek and download the Linux driver for your WiFi and install it as the readme file request. The problem will be fixed. I just got done do the very same thing on my Toshiba Laptop (RTL 8188CE).

    Re: 12.10 x64 - Lenovo E420s - RTL8188CE - Slow/Unstable Connection

    Hey guys,

I'm having similar issues with the RTL8188CE.
    I'm running 12.10 64 on a Lenovo T420.
My issues are that I cannot connect to any wireless network, although they do show up. Like paintba11er89, I have done extensive research on this issue but have come up empty handed each time.

Each time I attempt to connect to a network, it will try to connect, and every 20 - 30 seconds, the authentication window will pop up. I'll hit hit 'Connect,' and it will vanish then come back in that time frame.

I've tried using the compatibility wireless drives, and the official Realtek drives to no avail.

Here is what I have going on:

Anyone have any ideas on this? I have pretty much hit a brick wall. I'd really appreciate the assistance.

Note: This will be my first install of Ubuntu in a Laptop setting, and I'm fairly green to Ubuntu at the this level (Desktop environment).

    Re: 12.10 x64 - Lenovo E420s - RTL8188CE - Slow/Unstable Connection

One thought is that if you get the driver from Realtek to install without error, you may need to blacklist the 'built-in' module in order for the driver from Realtek to drive the adapter. I had to do this on Linux Mint 13. In my case the 'built-in' driver was rtl8188cu and the driver from Realtek was 8192cu, no rtl at the beginning.

    Re: 12.10 x64 - Lenovo E420s - RTL8188CE - Slow/Unstable Connection

    Hey kurt,

I tried blacklisting the module, rebooting, then installing the Realtek driver, then rebooting again. However, this time the wifi card does not come up at all. Also, when i run lspci -nnk | grep -iA2, it shows that the rtl8192ce driver is still in use.

Here is the output of lspci -nnk | grep -iA2

    Code:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter [10ec:8176] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8195]
    	Kernel driver in use: rtl8192ce
I was able to get the card online by loading the module. After that, I did notice that the card would connect but just briefly before disconnecting:

    Code:
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"sl-private"
              Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: D8:C7:C8:94:EE:B1
              Bit Rate=18 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
              Retry long limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off
              Encryption key:off
              Power Management:off
              Link Quality=57/70 Signal level=-53 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:7 Missed beacon:0
    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

I've had blacklisting a module not disable it from loading. There's clearly something else loading it but I don't know what. In my case I was disabling a separate adapter and was able to do so in network manager. I'm not knowledgeable enough to suggest what else is enabling the adapter, sorry. You might try PMing one of the gurus here, chii5555 and wildman are two that seem active.
