Re: 12.10 No GUI at all...?!?
Alright, an update on the situation.
I reinstalled Lubuntu 12.10 and now by virtue of being plugged into the network it managed to update itself and voila, the GUI is up.
However, the screen is set to the lowest brightness setting and the controls on the keyboard do not have any effect to changing it to a higher, at least smewhat readable, setting.
Is there anything I can do towards fixing the brightness of the screen?

turn the brightness up on your monitor?

Re: 12.10 No GUI at all...?!?
It's usually Fn+F7 or F8, also it could be FN and UP, DOWN, LEFT, or Right. It has been a while, and I've forgotten. Good Luck!

check your Fn Key and the related key with the same color

Re: 12.10 No GUI at all...?!?
So, I got the same problem in my Acer Aspire One D270, and a much straight forward way to get the GUI in Lubuntu 12.10 was given in this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lu...MinimalInstall
Particularly this part, try this in the console you get after starting and you log in (extracted from the same page):
sudo -i
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get autoclean
rm /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
reboot
This will install the full lubuntu GUI desktop, if it does not work at fist just restart and try again (It took me two time to make it run).
However, be aware that if you have the Intel GMA 3600 graphic chipset in your computer the screen will be dark (as Sayofethos describe above, mine was also). The sad part is that there are not drivers to recognize the Intel chipset in Lubuntu (and Intel don't care about providing them) so it won't work. On the bright side, some people have done some work about it for Archlinux:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144445
http://superuser.com/questions/42228...intel-gma-3650
I can't figure out what they did, so a straight forward installation package would be much appreciate (anyone?).
Cheers.
