10.04, Google Chrome redirects http to localhost

I'm new here so apologies if this is the wrong forum but this is an odd problem so it wasn't clear where to go.

At some point today Google Chrome started redirecting all http requests to localhost (I get the test page from my local Apache install). https works fine, as does Firefox

I was playing around with some network settings trying to get Android USB tethering to work so it's possible, even likely, I broke something, although otherwise everything seems to be working fine. Also, prior to this problem arising I accepted an update to Google Chrome so that may be an issue instead or as well but I've searched and haven't found any reports of anyone else experiencing this.

Some things I have done or examined to try to track this down:
uninstalled and purged and reinstalled Google Chrome (23.0.1271.95 stable)
trimmed all but the minimum from my hosts file (it only has an entry for 127.0.0.1 as localhost)
resolv.conf has three nameserver entries for DNS servers

I mostly use Firefox but there are some work-related tasks that I need to use Chrome for so I need to figure this out but it's out of my league.

    Any ideas? Thanks

Tell me these work-related stuff you are talking about, there may be a solution for Firefox since it's open source.
But if you, under no circumstances want to get this working on firefox then,
Clear browsing data -> Empty the cache, or delete chrome's profile.
If that doesn't work you can always reinstall all network-related packpages or ubuntu .
I have my Home dir in another partition, if I do something wrong to ubuntu I reinstall it, but all my preferences are safe and sound in the Home folder.

A thorough removal of anything Google on my system followed by a fresh install of Google Chrome hasn't helped. I'm guessing, therefore, that this is a network problem, although I'm completely puzzled why this only affects Chrome (and only http). I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic about reinstalling all network packages but I'm open to considering it if you weren't. I'd need some guidance on how to proceed, though. Thanks.

have you deleted the Chrome user profile? it's no use re-installing if the user profile is still there in the hidden home user directory.

Yup, completely removed all traces of anything Google from ~/.config/ before reinstalling Chrome and all extensions, history, cache, are gone so I think I got everything. Still can't http to the outside world in Chrome though.

This is looking more and more like it's a network configuration problem, not a Chrome problem, even though it only manifests itself in Chrome as far as I can tell. Any suggestions for how to return to network default settings or what to consider or where to look would be appreciated.
