Kubuntu and Edubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) Alpha 1 released!

"I am a ring-tailed roarer. I can draw faster, shoot straighter, ride harder, and drink longer than any man alive. I'm the rip-snortinest cowboy that ever rode North, South, East or West of the Rio Grande."

    - Pecos Bill, Tall Tale 1995

The first Alpha of the Raring Ringtail (to become 13.04) has now been released!

This alpha features images for Edubuntu and Kubuntu.

At the end of the 12.10 development cycle, the Ubuntu flavour decided that it would reduce the number of milestone images going forward and the focus would concentrate on daily quality and fortnightly testing rounds known as cadence testing. Based on that change, The Ubuntu product itself will not have an Alpha-1 release. Its first milestone release will be the FinalBetaRelease on the 28th of March 2013. Other Ubuntu flavours have the option to release using the usual milestone schedule.

Pre-releases of Raring Ringtail are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting and fixing bugs as we work towards getting this release ready.

Alpha 1 includes a number of software updates that are ready for wider testing. This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs.

While these Alpha 1 images have been tested and work, except as noted in the release notes, Ubuntu developers are continuing to improve Raring Ringtail. In particular, once newer daily images are available, system installation bugs identified in the Alpha 1 installer should be verified against the current daily image before being reported in Launchpad. Using an obsolete image to re-report bugs that have already been fixed wastes your time and the time of developers who are busy trying to make 13.04 the best Ubuntu release yet. Always ensure your system is up to date before reporting bugs.

As the Ubuntu Studio release manager and a Kubuntu developer, I do a lot of ISO testing and packaging.

I really think it's a bad idea that the other flavors are not doing Alpha's

But all we can do is wait and see.

I really can't see why we need alpha's, they are just an image at a certain time, that is only valid for a short period of time. If the daily iso's worked for me, I'd be testing them, weekly. Until the kernel gets fixed though there isn't a lot I can do, and an alpha or beta, won't solve my problem.

I don't know exactly why too. Edubuntu, apart from having some new packages installed, hasn't done much new things between 12.10 release and 13.04 Alpha 1 release. Kubuntu probably has newer features, since it features the latest KDE SC 4.10 Beta. However, you know, Edubuntu and Kubuntu's developers and release teams always like to be "ahead of the queue" and use every resources. So then well.. Anyway at least the images are usable somehow.

It might be just a way of organizing a schedule... Some teams need intermediate points clearly defined, some can work without them... It might be just a management style...
Another possibility is making a clean point so reinstall or things like that could be clearly defined and referenced...

What the developers are trying to do, is ensure that the live images work, every release, every time, for the majority of people. For the most part, they seem to be working, except for those of us that have certain AMD cpu's .
