Gnome running slowly on ubuntu 12.10

I installed ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop. I have tried other distros including OpenSUSE and Fedora (17), both with Gnome3. I really like Gnome3, and wanted to install it on ubuntu.

I managed to do so, but it lags and runs slowly compared with it on Fedora/OpenSUSE. For example, when logging it, after typing the password and hitting enter, it will hang for a good 5-10 seconds before responding.

Is it possible to make Gome3 run smoother, and if so, how do I do it? I'm having to make do with unity at the moment, Gnome3 was too slow.

By GNOME 3 do you mean GNOME Shell? How did you install it?

I used these instructions.

Another negative side effect was that after I installed Gnome3, every time I booted into ubuntu it ran a disk check.

These are instructions for Ubuntu 11.04, GNOME Shell wasn't easily available and didn't work well when installed alongside Unity back then. On Ubuntu 12.10 you should install GNOME Shell from the official repositories.

I have the Gnome Shell and XFCE installed on 12.10 along with Unity without any lag/slowness problem. My hardware is middle of the road and I installed the Gnome shell from the software center.

Ok, its a bit quicker from there. I still find it lags, particularly when logging in, compared to gnome shell on fedora/opensuse though.
