What Applications do you HAVE to have after a fresh Linux install?

The first thing I do after updating a new install is get the applications I really 'need' to complete the install.

Unless already installed by default, I make sure to install the following...

    AWN
Cairo Dock (If AWN is not available)
Docky (If AWN and Cairo Dock are not available)
    Rar/Unrar
    7Zip
    gThumb
    GIMP
    Firefox
    Google Chrome
    Qbittorrent
    Gnomebaker
    VLC
    SMplayer
    Openshot
PiTiVi (If Openshot is not available)
    DeaDBeeF
    Clementine
    Soundconverter
    EasyTag
    Audacity
    LibreOffice
Abiword (If LibreOffice is not available)

Coincidentally, The Register answers that question today:

That depends on the installed distro and environment. Kubuntu is pretty complete but I always install Firefox and Thunderbird. Ubuntu already includes those.

One application from outside the repos I always install is OpenTTD. It's also in the repos but that version is always outdated.

The apps that I use a lot would be the following:
    Google Chrome browser
Kdenlive (from sunab's PPA since repo is outdated)
    Audacity
    LXTerminal (more lightweight then gnome-terminal)
    Pavucontrol (finite control of pulseaudio)
    DeVeDe
Medibuntu repos for latest ffmpeg and libraries
    VLC
    Kino
    GIMP
    Picasa
    Skype
    GNUCash
    Filezilla

Im pretty happy with most of the Kubuntu defaults but Chromium, VLC (not that Dragon player is bad, but I like keeping VLC around) and the various games I own or enjoy.
I tend to keep Skype around, even though I don't use it very much.

I do not have to install any applications. It is a subjective statement.

The absolute very first thing that I have to install before anything else is Yakuake (Guake for Gnome / Unity users). After that it's a matter of just adding in the other applications that I like.
