Can't get video to work

I'm using Lubuntu 12.04 and installed the restricted-extras as well as VLC, but can't get my various .mkv, mp4, avi files to play. Audio and YouTube seem to work OK. Anyone know an answer.? Thanks.

Can you install SMPlayer:

sudo apt-get install mplayer smplayer

and then play one of the problem files? You can then post the logs that SMPlayer generates when or if playback fails. These logs can be seen at Options --> View Logs. Hopefully some hints there...
