Question Getting Terminal started in 12.04

I've got Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit running in a VM VirtualBox
What I have is a screen with a stack of icons along the left hand side which represent programs, like Firefox, Ubuntu One, etc.

When I go into Ubuntu Software Center I can bring up a list of all the software currently installed. When I pick an item, Terminal for example, I get a description, a green circle with a check mark, a REMOVE button, a Section called People Also Installed and Reviews

There is nothing that tells me or shows me how to get this software operating, how to put it on my desktop or anything else.

    What am I missing here?

And for an intro to the Unity desktop check the official documentation.
