    Ubuntu based Distros

I was looking for a nice system to be used for some older hardware, but easily supporting all the modern internet apps used by the youngsters. Normally I do it in three steps:
    - Try out the system using VirtualBox.
    - If I like the system I install it on a partition on my main desktop and show it to the family.
    - If they like it, I install it on their system.

Lately I have tried Peppermint 3.1 and Linux Mint 14.1 both based on Ubuntu and both crashing the installer during the last steps. An experience like this directly turn me off. I know many people try a distro first in VirtualBox too. Is it so difficult for the distro to test at least the installer using VirtualBox?

if computer doesn't have enough ram the installer could crash.

otherwise it doesn't/shouldn't. i never had it happening except on maschine with 256MB RAM.

even if GUI installer crashes the alternate (text based) installer should work.

    Re: Ubuntu based Distros

i have had installers crash for several reasons not having to do with the OS.
a bad DVD, a dirty DVD rom, a dvd rom that didnt like a specific brand of media.

Recently i have gone to installing primarily from usb. havent had an installer crash since.
The only dumb question is the one not asked.

I installed on Virtualbox, so no need to burn a DVD or CD. The memory was 512MB, so that should be enough.

I have downloaded the Mint Desktop as alternative desktop for Ubuntu 12.10. It looks like any other classic desktop, nothing special a little bit boring. It looks like Windows XP with a different color scheme.

Out of the box I prefer Ubuntu. You only need one click for most applications you use.

Don't be surprised if it runs slow with 512mb of ram. I believe 12.04 uses about 380mb - OOTB. If your system ram is needed for video or audio, you may find that it slows significantly.

You might try Lubuntu or even Xubuntu should you find it slowing or locking up. They require less resources, while still remaining under the Canonical umbrella.

    Re: Ubuntu based Distros

We have a misunderstanding in Virtualbox I reserved 512 MB of memory and Linux Mint would not install. The Cinnamon desktop I installed on the host system and that one has 1.5 GB of memory.

Cinnamon 1.6 is fast enough, but finally after I got the chance trying it it out, I decided that I really prefer Unity.
