Working with GPIOs

Hi all

I'd like to be able to read and write to and from GPIO ports. Now i'm a little confused because i'm not sure if I still have to install some kind of framework (or recompile the kernel) or if i'm just tackling the problem the wrong way.

Now i've got a little program which should read and set a value but when it runs it returns the Message: "Cannot open direction file". I guess its a reference to the file in the GPIO export folder. (Program can be found in the attachment)

Running System:
Ubuntu 12.04
on a iEi Wafer-PV-D5252

Does anybody have an idea how i can get this to work?
