    just bought a 79 dollar backup harddrive password protect ?
    i just want to protect my files so other people can use the harddrive
    for backing up

    You can always use Truecrypt to encrypt the whole thing (password required to mount it). In fact, if you encrypt the entire drive (make one large unformatted partition and encrypt that), it will show up to anyone not in the know as a completely blank hard drive if you use Truecrypt. No one will even realize there's data on it.

    If you use Truecrypt, you can even format it with NTFS if you ever think you'd use this drive with Windows. That way, you could use it with Ubuntu, too.

    One thing you CAN'T do is prevent someone from just formatting the drive and wiping out everything on it, though, unless the drive has special hardware for that (doubt it).
