Best Linux for laptop

Check out Linux Mint Debian Edition with the xfce desktop. It ubuntufies or rather mintifies debian which, with the xfce desktop, is significantly snappier than even xubuntu.

I have a similar spec'd laptop and I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I think it runs fine although I have 4GB of RAM installed which I feel also helps. Probably a good idea to try a lighter edition... I'd try a base Debian install. I'd use Debian only I love Ubuntu

duo core intel processor from 3 years ago
1 gb ram
1.4ghz
inbuilt graphics
Ubuntu is just too slow so got any ideas for a good lightweight Linux or something that can run well on these spec
