    Talking Just switched to Kubuntu

I have been using Linux for almost 9 years now having started with Mandriva in 2004. I shortly afterwards switched to Ubuntu with Hoary Hedgehog and have been using Ubuntu as my primary operating system ever since.

In my time using Linux I have also become well acquainted with Fedora, Debian, and Linux Mint. Ubuntu has always been my favorite however and I have always preferred the simplicity and non-obtrusiveness of Gnome over KDE. I even appreciated it as more and more eyecandy entered Gnome with Compiz etc.

With the switch the Unity, I had begun being plagued with performance issues even when using an i7 with 6 gigs of RAM. My system just seemed sluggish and slow. I was hopeful with each release that it would get better but instead it seemed to get worse.

For quite some time I had been contemplating switching to another system or GUI but I couldn't settle anywhere. I tried Linux Mint but it did nothing for me and I was never crazy about how Gnome3 worked on Fedora. The simpler interfaces like LXDE or Xfce always seemed lacking to me for a modern desktop. Even though I was bothered by Unity I still felt that as a whole Ubuntu was the best put together Linux distro with great support.

I came to the point where I got so fed up with Unity's sluggishness that I even considered switching to a Mac as my next computer

I finally decided to take another shot at using KDE. I had never been a fan of it in the past always finding it a bit clunky and un-elegant but after installing Kubuntu 12.10 and customizing it to my liking I am enjoying my Linux desktop more then ever. KDE 4 has become a polished elegant and highly customizable modern GUI. It is far quicker, more responsive and more fluid than any Desktop I have used recently, and it comes with some highly productive tools and utilities.

I am pleased to say that after almost leaving Ubuntu after 9 years, I will continue being a member of the Ubuntu community with Kubuntu 12.10.

    Re: Just switched to Kubuntu

Ultimately, that's precisely why I stick with Ubuntu all these years since Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty!) and really linux in general.

Having the choice and an avenue to take when you don't like the standard options provided.

I used KDE 4 for awhile on Ubuntu but for no significant reason at all I slowly moved to GNOME 3 which I've been using for at least a couple months. It has really been growing on me.

What I like about KDE more than all the other Desktops is the ecosystem of useful utilities it comes with.. In GNOME and Unity, you need to grab a bunch of extra utilities to do the most basic configuration changes (gnome-tweak-tool, gnome-shell extensions all over the place to add the most basic of Desktop functionality present even in Windows 95.. xscreensaver just to get screen-saver, seriously in 2012??)

In KDE, you can find, add and apply new desktop-backgrounds right from the Appearance utility, where you choose the desktop-background you want... From the utility you choose your Desktop theme, you can find add and apply new themes with a few clicks of your mouse..

Kudos to your new-found love of KDE and your continued love of Ubuntu!

Absolutely! The built in tools and utilities that come with KDE are very useful. That combined with the fact that it is highly customizable yet still easy to use and attractive make it my new favorite DE.

I would definitely urge all Ubuntu users who are contemplating switching to another distro/ or who have already switched to another distro to try Kubuntu and see how they like it!

    I agree.
But I'm just back from Kubuntu.
Lack of printer suppport HP 1020.
File handling, USB handling aren't easy access.
    Keyboarding is superior in Ubuntu

    Prefer Ubuntu/Xubuntu.
Unity in 12.10 has quirks- but overall is great.
    Simplicity.

Unity definitely has it's quirks but I never had an actual usability issue with it. I don't mind the layout of the GUI at all. My issue with Unity has been performance. Everything just seems so sluggish on it, even with a quicker machine.

Just out of curiosity though what USB issues have you had with Kubuntu? I have been using it with thumb drives and external drives and have no run into any issues yet.

what do you mean? printer support/drivers are in kernel since Kubuntu uses same kernel as ubutnu it will support same hardware. for hp you can also install hplip if necessary.

File handling, USB handling aren't easy access.
what issues you had in file handling? i don't see it to be much different than in Gnome or XFCE. USB handling? you plug it in and can access it from the launchbar (or whatever it's called)

to the OP - and then you find out they have KDE for netbooks (nice interface for those small screens) and KDE for tablets (looks sleek with some interesting features, still under dev. though). and then you htink they might be on to something. the only thing i haven't seen is a TV interface, but i bet one could use tablet or netbook one for that.

all in all i think they are on the right track.
Easy to understand Ubuntu manual with lots of pics: http://ubuntu-manual.org/

Printer currently does not work in Kubuntu. Is that so hard to take? Google it.

Alot of people will find Kubuntu beautiful and stable nowdays, but it does tend to get in MY WAY.

KDE is the most mature, polished DE out there, it works flawlessly with minimal CPU resources and when it comes to games, its the champion.
