Rig details: Core i7 920, 9 GB RAM, Radeon 5870 1GB, Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit + Unity3D

The open source ATI drivers are more or less useless for me; Dash is impossibly slow, Nexius has texture corruption and is extremely slow. The power of the card is clearly not an issue, as pretty much all modern games run with the details maxed in Windows. I tried installing both the ATI drivers from the repo, and the one from ATI's site. Both were able to install successfully, but both broke Compiz for me, leaving me with a blank desktop, whereupon I had to force quit X and purge the drivers from the command prompt. Has anybody else had luck getting this card to run? With Steam for Linux on the horizon, I really want to get the graphics side of this rig working properly.
