Headphones won't mute speakers [ACER]

Yes, I know this is a very common problem, but the answers I've seen so far don't work or don't make sense (mostly they don't make sense)

I have an Acer Aspire 5920 with Ubuntu 12.04. I plug in my headphones and get audio through the headphones and the speakers. I'd prefer the speakers mute when I plug in my headphones. Any fixes?

Thanks. Tried your suggestion, rebooted, but "problem" still exists.

With alsamixer I can silence the speakers manually but I would like it to be just like in windows: headphones plugged in = silent speakers.

Maybe it is just lazyness......

How did you get 12.04 to load on your acer 5290.

I'm running 10.04 and my acer just won't take the 12.04.

I've tried many threads but no luck.

I'm about ready to give up.
