Re: Ati drivers on Ubuntu 12.10

As I mentioned above there are no other drivers that you can install.

The only drivers for your card that work with Ubuntu 12.10 are the ones which come loaded as standard with a Ubuntu installation.

I installed ati drivers the way explained by the links i've posted; and many other ways, but ati drivers everytime. Each of this driver bring to an end: black screen at first reboot. The problem is, i can't use ubuntu with the driver it provides because of very low resolution and no graphic acceleration. If ther is absolutely no other way to solve this, i wonder if i have to choose another version of ubuntu...

Re: Ati drivers on Ubuntu 12.10

The most recent version of Ubuntu that will work with a proprietary Linux driver for your card is 9.04. This is because the driver has been moved to a legacy support branch and the legacy driver will not work with any X Server post 2008.

There is no work around, hack or solution. This is not unique to Ubuntu. It applies to any Linux distribution that uses X Server and the version of X Server is post 2008. So even going to another distro will be fruitless.

Nobody in the Linux community has any control over this. The decision to move the driver support for your card to a legacy branch was the sole responsibility of AMD/ATI.

Unlike those who recently encountered the decision by AMD to move the HD 2XXX to HD 4XXX models to a legacy driver branch, you do not have the option to downgrade X Server and use an older driver. Even for those who can do that, it is a work around and not a solution. Its utility will inevitably be dashed.

Again, as others above have stated several times: There is no "solution" for you. No instructions you find on the web will work, so there is no point in searching for them and trying them only to be frustrated. You are left only with using the open source Radeon driver with its limited capabilities. That driver is what the open source community has been able to do to maintain the continued operation of your card -- and the developers have done an extremely good job considering that the code for the original driver is closed and they cannot reverse engineer the hardware.

Or you can purchase another card -- an HD 5xxx series or greater.

FakeJack, you need to remove the proprietary fglrx/Catalyst driver and boot using the open-source/default ati driver. Then, post the Xorg log. Until we see a log, no one can tell you why you have wrong resolution.

    Here's the log from Xorg0.log.

@QIII: i didn't mean to complain, sorry if that was the impression. Last time i used ubuntu was some years ago; i noticed a great improvement, especially for the driver side. I just wanted to know more about a problem that seem "unfixable", i know that this come from ATI/AMD.

Okay, thanks for the log. What resolution are you trying to achieve? What does this command show?:
    Code:
    xrandr -q
Note that Unity probably has a frontend for xrandr, but I'm not a Unity user and I do things via the commandline.

Re: Ati drivers on Ubuntu 12.10

I saw somebody previous get slammed in this topic for discussing a card that was not an ATI 9600 like the OP's card, but the thread title was 'ATI drivers on Ubuntu 12.10' so maybe this is the right place...

I have an ATI Radeon 3400 (in a Lenovo T400) -- When I run the ATI card (in discreet graphics mode), I get strange visual artifacts on the screen (Image attached).. does this seem like it'd be related to the lack of ATI Proprietary drivers?

That same "shearing?" effect can be seen on many other tooltips (but oddly it will only affect some at any given time while others will be OK).. and it will affect parts of my desktop background and some parts of application windows (typically the edges)

    Any thoughts?

Re: Ati drivers on Ubuntu 12.10

The "right place" to post would be a new thread. That will get you help specifically for your issue and won't confound this thread by attempting to answer two separate questions.

Yours is an issue raised by more recent changes.

Nobody is trying to "slam" anyone. It is simply easier to deal with one issue at a time in a thread and make sure FakeJack gets full attention on his problem.
