    I don't recognise the "modesetting" driver label.
    Sounds like a kms driver for the framebuffer for console & before the X server driver takes over..

    could try
    sudo Xorg -configure
    - this will write a new xorg.conf file..

    Your previous posted output from "lsmod | grep gma" does show the gma500_gfx loaded so maybe this is all you get..

    Reading:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Poulsbo
    modesetting is the driver name of gma500_gfx
    $ sudo Xorg -configure
    _
    Code:
    XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
    _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

    Fatal server error:
    Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running

    Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
         at http://wiki.x.org
     for help.
    (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.
    (EE)
    Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.
    No idea at this point, still sticking with the original XRandR return unfortunately;

    xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 2048x2048 (desired size 3286x1080)

    I did add the file as suggested from xorg crack pushers, no dice, here is the last Xorg.0.log file for preview.

    Re: 12.10 - Extended Desktop - How to change virtual desktop size?

    Most excellent : while not an 'exact' fix, it's a work around for the current time.

    With everything already currently in place (including that fix from the arch linux thread) that included adding:

    /usr/shar/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf

    Code:
     Section "Device"
        Identifier "gma500_gfx"
        Driver     "modesetting"
        Option     "SWCursor"       "ON"
     EndSection
    I read this conversation here:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...&postcount=127

    Took the guy's advice about just 'stacking' the screens - modified the string for my system:

    Code:
    xrandr --output LVDS-0 --mode 1366x768 --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080 --below LVDS-0

    And it's up. I can work with this - thanks for your help!

    Stacking makes sense so the total is less than 2Kx2K.

    Did you read the bit (on ArchWiki Poulsbo) about allocating more memory to the GPU?

    Small chance it could let you have more pixels..

    I missed that part, I'm going to check that out.

    Luckily, I running XFCE which is the default on Ubuntu Studio 12.10 - so it's OK at the moment.

    Re: 12.10 - Extended Desktop - How to change virtual desktop size?

    Hmmm - it's not worth it on this architecture to run that fix for Ubuntu Studio 12.10, in theory it should work fine, but it's slowed the system up considerably.

    However, all aside - it's working as it should.
