Software RAID recovery console not showing? Only black screen.

I'm testing out my new install and I purposefully disconnected one drive to trigger the recovery console. Now the machine is sitting at a black screen, but the keyboard responds (numlock turns on/off). Which makes me think it just isn't able to display the recovery console, like I heard some other people seeing in some of the other research I've done (no fix there).

I've got an NVidia GTX 28x 'ish card (Engineering sample I think) in a p67 SandyBridge motherboard if it matters. I installed the proprietary driver to improve Compiz performance, but I don't know if the open source, Nouveau driver would work any better.

Suggestions? Or known problems?

I've tried a newer video card (NVidia 550 gt) and I'm seeing the same behavior. Unfortunately I also have found a RAM problem (got a failure in memtest before the first pass was up). So going to fix that before I work much more on this, but still am curious if others have heard of or seen this before.
