What are your system specs? Have you tried adjusting the video settings from within minecraft? You may want to try Optifine

update lwgl from http://www.lwjgl.org/ , use optifine and try lowering video settings, ex. setting render distance to tiny, turn off particle effects.

Sometimes this happens to me, I log in to my minecraft, and I go to the multiplayer screen and it starts goin to a framerate of .5 or something. I think it depends on what you say is so laggy. When that happens, it's usually because I didn't update my java so it doesn't work. If you're just talking about being all jumpy, then that means that your network is slow. so you should try to update your java in the update manager or synaptic. Also, like jerome1232 said, you can get optifine.
