Dual monitoring: HP dv6 with Samsung Syncmaster 226bw

I have properly installed Ubuntu 12.04, along with the driver for the video card on my HP DV6 3050 us (using ati mobility radeon 4200). I am trying to dual monitor with my Samsung Syncmaster 226bw using a DVI to HDMI connector.

I do not get any picture whatsoever on my Samsung monitor, and nothing comes up when I go to 'displays' and try to detect the monitor.

One issue that might be causing this that I have read about:

The DV6 has switchable graphics (one for better battery life). When I open the Catalyst control center, the "Power saving GPU" is always on. If I try to set it to the other GPU, it says the computer requires a restart- but if I restart it and go back to the menu, it still shows that the battery saving GPU is on.

I also have tried to alter the BIOS, no such luck.
