    Re: reinstalling xubuntu

Sounds to me like you really only want to reinstall XFCE.

    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge xfce4
    sudo apt-get autoremove
    sudo apt-get install xfce
I doubt that will eliminate the problem of dependencies refusing to install, though. That problem might be caused by sources you added in order to install Cinnamon and Mate. Perhaps you could provide more information about that...

    Re: reinstalling xubuntu

My goodness, what a bunch of confusion!

There is no such command in Linux as "reinstall." Only "install." I'm a graphical user, so for most of my installation / removal / reinstallation stuff I use Synaptic Package Manager.

The package you want to reinstall may be "xubuntu-desktop" rather than "Xfce." Try using Synaptic to locate that metapackage, select Mark for Reinstallation, and go with that.

xubuntu-desktop is a metapackage. Its only purpose is as a dependency placeholder. Uninstalling or reinstalling it won't do anything.

Have you tried directly installing the packages it says "won't be installed" to see if it kicks any helpful error messages?

there has to be a way of completely removing xfce and xubuntu including all preferences. then i could log back into a unity or classic session and install xfce and xubuntu.
