    The last straw

I have three machines running Ubu12.04 and all have been giving me serious problems - OpenGL not working -they are all NVidia.
I have been using XFCE in preference to Unity as Unity offers me nothing apart from easing a few management features.
After an upgrade yesterday I cannot run Unity at all on one machine - a 1 year old 4 core AMD.
I used to like Ubuntu now it seems to be the flakiest distribution there is.
I am going to re-install with Xubuntu to see if that is usable

If this is a support question, then please provide more details about the hardware and the graphics drivers. Also, "cannot run Unity" is not very helpful. Are there error messages? Anything in the system log file or .xsession-errors file?

I tried Cinnamon a few months back and love it. I's like old gnome just a bit better IMO.

    The PPA is here
    https://launchpad.net/~gwendal-lebih...innamon-stable

    and can be added by

    Code:
    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
    after that just

    Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install cinnamon nemo
log out and select it from the drop down menu

    Re: The last straw

I've reached "breaking point" a few times during the course of using Ubuntu as my primary OS over the years, but I'm slowly discovering that "breaking point" is not "beyond the point of no return".

The graphics drivers in Linux has always been a thorn for me. I have particular requirements, like dual-monitor support without any tearing, smoothness and responsiveness, ability to play Quake Live effortlessly.

To cut a long story short, a couple of days ago I decided to do a native install of 12.10 (after using Mac OS and Windows for the past 6 or so months). Again, I had trouble with the nVidia drivers on my Sony laptop sporting an nVidia 330m. On about the third install, I decided to leave the Nouveau drivers installed. I was really surprised and how well the desktop functioned with the Nouveau drivers - my wobbly windows worked flawlessly, dragging windows around was quick and responsive (more so than with the nVidia BLOBs), the desktop cube works perfectly (although 3D Windows does not). Using Nouveau I'm still, however, unable to play Quake Live. I haven't tried attaching my laptop to my TV via HDMI yet either.

It's a pity there wasn't more cooperation between nVidia and the open source community who do their best to produce open alternatives for nVidia GPUs. I find what the community has achieved (despite of the lack of cooperation) nothing short of a miracle.

    Re: The last straw

Sorry - not so much a support call as a complaint - I had a flu jab a couple of days ago and am perhaps more crabby than normal.
I am a developer and find the only way to get good project separation is to use different logins and the time taken to switch between users has gone up exponentially of late. My machines are also used by family members and as of 11:10 switching users has become intolerable.
I have a 4 core machine which seems to use its 15Gflops of processing power hiding functionality from me - a two line config mod now takes three or four days of research to find out of date documentation. I used to use Unity for some management configuration but now that no longer runs I'm going to a more 'standard' distribution.
The support request would be can how can I have ubuntu back?

if you have a bit older AMD card on your old mashcine you need to use legacy driver.
