If you want to know some basics, why not start with what Ubuntu already provides?

    Lightbulb Re: Ubuntu Basics

Well, not sure how basic of info you want... but here goes.

Ubuntu is a Debian Linux variant. I've found it to be faster and more stable than Windows 7. By default it comes with the Unity desktop environment (an acquired taste), but can run any Linux DE. Personally I prefer a GNOME/KDE hybrid, but that's getting a bit away from basics. (PM me if you want to know how to set that up)

Ubuntu, being a Linux distribution, allows the user complete control of everything on the computer when using root/sudo. Everything can be customized to the way you like it. If you have a knowledge of Python or other programming languages, you can customize it even further.

There are many free programs for Ubuntu and other distros that rival expensive programs for Windows. In recent years there has been an upkick in Linux gaming, as developers are starting to realize the allure of a free and customizable OS.

So basicly, Ubuntu is worth the try if you're coming from Windows. If you're coming from another version of Linux, all I can say is that .deb packages are a lot more common than .rpm, so Ubuntu may open you up to more free software. Either way, it's at least worth a test drive.

    Re: Ubuntu Basics

Here are the best Ubuntu sites in my experience/opinion:

    http://help.ubuntu.com
    http://wiki.ubuntu.com
    http://ubuntuforums.org
    http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/

I would not dream of following instructions from some random guy's blog until I have investigated my question on the sites above.
