Can't connect to the internet on Ubuntu 12.04

The problem that I am facing is that I cannot connect to the internet. My modem has 4 ethernet ports and 1 USB port. When I am using the ethernet port it is getting connected to the internet, as it usually does without any problem. But when I connect the modem using the USB, nothing happens. The modem does get recognized, and I can see the LED, which indicated physical connection to the computer going off, and also lsusb, also shows the modem, and so does lshw. But when I open up the browser to see the modem settings using 192.168.1.1, the page does not connect.
Does this means that the modem is not connected?

And also, I cannot enter the PPOE details of my internet service provider.

Why would you want to connect with a USB port? Usually on routers they are meant to facilitate shared storage or to be used as a printserver.
Connecting with ethernet would be much faster anyway
    I'm thinking about it

There is no such reason, except that I just thought of connecting it. So, is there a solution to this problem?

Since there is no problem. there can't be a solution either. The USB port works as designed.
    I'm thinking about it
