failed upgrade to 11.10

I recently attempted to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10. During the process, the machine became totally unresponsive and shut down hard.

Machine will no longer boot up. Grub does come up. Boot up in recovery mode stalls. Would appreciate any advice on how to recover system.

You may be able to use the live CD and retrieve your personal files then do a fresh install.

If the live CD fails to get you in, maybe photorec will work.
