Angry Acer Veriton 281G Wireless Not Working

Greetings everyone - I'm hoping that someone can help me with this one because it's driving me crazy. I recently bought an Acer Veriton 'nettop'. This box comes loaded with linpus linux. I have now dual booted it with 12.04. Unfortunately under Ubuntu the wireless isn't working at all.

I did a search to see if anyone else has come across this issue but didn't see it listed. Here's my output:

    1) Hardware - Acer Veriton 281G

    2) Wireless Brand/Chipset

Re: Acer Veriton 281G Wireless Not Working

Hmmm I did some more poking around. There appears to be different bin files in /lib/firmware/rtlwifi bewtween the linpus installation and the ubuntu installation.

Could it be that these missing files in Ubuntu are what's causing the wireless to not work?

Re: Acer Veriton 281G Wireless Not Working

One other thought I just had. Would it be worth trying out another Distro to see if it is simply a lack of support for the hardware in Ubuntu? Perhaps something like mepis or suse?

    Anyone?

The hardware is supported in Ubuntu. What do you make of this?

Do you really have two separate wireless cards there? What do these tell us?
    Code:

    I suppose it's a dual-band N device. I love a mystery!

    What does Unkown CUT! mean?
I don't know and I doubt it's significant. Googling the phrase yields a few hits; none are bugs or complaints about the device not working. Your question will appear as a hit soon!

Frankly, all your readings look solid. You have a driver; you have firmware; you have two, count them, two wireless interfaces. Does it scan?
    Code:
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
Any errors, warnings, etc. are significant; please post them.

    What exactly doesn't work?
Unfortunately under Ubuntu the wireless isn't working at all.

    No scan

    jeff@jeff-Veriton-N281G:~$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    [sudo] password for jeff:
    wlan0 No scan results

But no error messages either. My work laptop also running 12:04 connects perfectly. For some reason at least under Ubuntu I'm just not able to connect to the wireless network. It's not seeing any access points and I'm surrounded by at least 6.

What makes little sense is that if I reboot to Linpus it connects to my home network immediately.

Re: Acer Veriton 281G Wireless Not Working

    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
Any change with wlan1? What is Network Manager doing all this time?
    Code:
    sudo cat /var/log/syslog | grep etwork | tail -n20
I assume you are testing with the ethernet cable detached.

Ugh! All we see are entries related to ethernet. Let's dig deeper:
    Code:
    sudo cat /var/log/syslog | grep wlan | tail -n20
