Question Would the G530 Sandy Bridge Celeron really be worth the dough?

Hi there! Looked a little into low-end processors, and I think the Celeron G530 Sandy Bridge would be a pretty decent deal, I mean it's $50 for a dual-core, c'mon! XD Anyways, would that be a sufficient low-end chip, or would I be better off going with an i3?

Use is for with just an average desktop PC running a custom install of Ubuntu with a minimalist desktop setup.

If the RAM, FSB and GPU are decent enough you wouldn't even need a minimal setup to run Ubuntu on the celeron. I am currently using something much slower with Kubuntu using desktop effects and get 60 + fps for desktop composition.

unless you wanna do the gaming on that computer (although, i doubt in it) I'd wait few weeks for AMD Trinity to be released- it won't beat i3 cpu-performance-wise, but it has a quite powerfull GPU on it- so you wouldn't really have to buy a discrete one (so you would save some money)- and still being able to play some older games. With TDP of 65 (of non-overclockable version) it would be quite easy to keep it cool and quiet.
But, of course, if you wanna run games on it etc i'd rather go into i3.

Would still prefer it anyways. Kinda prefer Fluxbox or Openbox over GNOME or KDE, TBH.

How is Linux support for AMD Trinity?

I tend to avoid anything with the word "Celeron" in it.

i think it would be ok. maybe not for notebook since it could have power saving features disabled. but for general desktop use its ok.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
Full disk backup (newer kernel -> suitable for newer PC): Clonezilla
User friendly full disk backup: Rescuezilla
