HPLIP and HP6500A plus printer headache

I have had this printer for a couple of months now and cannot for the life of me get it working properly connected by USB - I havent even started with wireless! I'm running a Dell XPS710 and my main partition is Ubuntu 10.04 and the HPLIP version is 3.12.9 with device manager 15.0(Qt4) and I cannot even see it as a device, lsusb sees it with:

    Bus 001 Device 006: ID 03f0:5412 Hewlett-Packard

but when you scan for devices HPLIP says no devices found.

The situation is somewhat better with my small Mint 13 partition. Here, everything is found, scanner works printer is seen and works but two sided printing does not. I have tried most suggestions appearing on a number of forums regarding ensuring duplex is set as present, printing with A4 autoduplex option but nothing seems to work.

Hell guys all I want is a working printer AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH
