12.04 server on vmware, dont know how its network

I am a big windows guy. Sys admin at the company. I'm taking a swing at linux. So I have ubuntu 12.04 lts on my vmware server.

Everything is working fine. For the life of me, I can't figure out how the networking is setup.
I can ping address, do nslookup and get a totally different computer name.
is hostname setup differently on linux than windows?
Am I missing something?

However, I can communicate with that ubuntu server fine.

nvm i got everything working.

hostname, ip address, name resolves now.
