    12.10 upgrade woes

    Hey crew.

I had an upgrade issue today while going from 12.04 to 12.10. Well, two issues but I think they are related.

Upgrade went smoothly, but upon boot, GRUB now only lists 11.10 with a 3.0 kernel.
    uname -r says it's a 3.0.0.12 kernel. Running cat /etc/issue says it's "12.10 \n \l"

Almost everything is ok, but the broadcom-based wireless card no longer works. At all. I tried enabling it via the restricted drivers. Jockey returned an error, asking me to look at the log. I will post that at the end.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the broadcom package a few times, no luck. I really can't get it to go. The machine is an Inspirion 1545 with a 1397 broadcom chip.

Now, an intensive google search shows this problem a lot with people upgrading to 11.10. Hence my conclusion that these issues are linked. I tried manually upgrading the kernel to 3.4. No luck. Then 3.5. Nope. Apt says it was successful. uname still reports 3.0.0.12.

Any ideas? I'd prefer not to reinstall, but I understand sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
Thanks a TON for your help!

    Re: 12.10 upgrade woes

I discovered that USB drives aren't working either. Again, a common issue that was in 11.10

I downloaded the 12.10 iso on my other computer, "burned" it to a USB drive. So, when running it live, the wifi works again.
I'll reinstall tomorrow and report back.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened though...

    Re: 12.10 upgrade woes

    Complete reinstall fixed the problem.

No idea what caused the issue to begin though. If I ever figure it out, I'll post it here.
