Using Grub recovery mode to hack system

Given a BIOS password is set, boot order taken care of, administrative accounts not given out, et cetera, although Grub is not secured,

then how hard is it for someone to hack into a system, given they do not open the laptop or desktop case and start fiddling around with jumper or batteries?

Do someone entering recovery mode need to know advanced commands at the root-shell prompt, or can they simply select the "clean," "repair broken packages," or other menu choices and screw the system up without much relevant knowledge?

I am worried about the possibility for anyone to break something in a system when Grub is not secured (as it seems hard to do so http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12319186).

Can someone who knows nothing can fiddle around aimlessly and break something, or does that require knowledge about relevant root commands?

i suppose you already knows the answers, been talked on the other thread, and given also who to mail to. How long do you think someone can find a few howto googling around ? and im sure everyone can easily hit the target.

but if yourself search a bit about "hardening grub" and/or "hardening ubuntu" , "hardening linux", you probably should find something like:

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Security

which gives you some grub2 howto.

    and also:

What this thread is also about, is whether the system can be broken using any other option than the "root" one: http://itsfoss.com/wp-content/upload...r-Password.jpg

I am guessing one can screw up the system using a few keystrokes. System seems to remain safe most options having been selected in the menu, though.

Anyway, I have already given the laptop away. If they break their system, then they will have to deal with the damage they have caused! Law of nature.
