Hello all !

It is my time to contribute to this Ubuntu Community.

So, here it goes:

How to install "MS Word" (or Other Language) Fonts in Ubuntu 5.10:

To install the Fonts Automatically:

1. Launch the "Synaptic Package Manager"
(from the Menu, select "System\Administration\Synaptic Package Manager")

2. On the Standard Toolbar, click on the button named "Search" & type in "fonts".

3. Read through the list, locate & download for "msttcorefonts" Package.

4. Download & Install it.

5. Now, when you start "Open Office", it should show some of the most common
"Microsoft Word" Fonts (e.g. Ariel, Courier New, Times New Roman, etc.).

An alternative method, is to install the Fonts manually (one by one).

To install the Fonts Manually:

1. Copy the Font files to a ".fonts" folder (to install for one User only).
To do this, perform the following:

a. Go to "/home" & create a folder named ".fonts" ("." means a hidden folder)

b. To be able to see that hidden folder, from Menu, select "View\Show Hidden
Files"

c. Copy the Font files to the ".fonts" folder you created in step a (to install for
one User only)

OR:

2. Copy the Font files to "/usr/share/fonts" (to install for ALL Users), or

3. Open "nautilus" (with "Alt+F2" & then type "nautilus"), type "Ctrl-L" to move to
the "Location Bar", go to the Fonts folder (by simply typing: "fonts://") &
drag&drop or copy&paste Font files there.

Note:
The above Method 1 is NOT good, because it installs the Fonts only for a Single User.

... and by the way:

To be able to view & work on Open Office Org's "Writer" files in the Windows (Microsoft's "Word") world, ALL files MUST be saved in the ".doc" format instead of the DEFAULT "odt" format (in the Ubuntu side).

When I realized that, I had to RE-save EACH & EVERY file I created in "Writer" in the ".doc" format to make it work in Windows MS "Word"...
That was a pretty "time-consuming" procedure for me - because my files were many...

Have Fun !!!
