In windows there is Process Viewer. It shows details of processes running like top does on linux, or minimizes to the system tray and shows the cpu usage.

try adding system monitor to your panel.
it doesn't minimize to tray though

I added system monitor to the corner of my toolbar, it's nice and small and unobstructive.
Right click your panel, click "Add to Panel" and choose System Monitor.
You can adjust the preferences of this by right clicking
