Re: An idea for you guys at System76
Convertible laptop with a touchscreen?
Check out the Fujitsu Lifebook T901, I think this is what irv could use...there are some with regular HDD selling for $600ish on FeePay. Some with SSD selling for way too much more. Take a 250GB HDD out of a $600 one, drop in a $100 128GB SSD, and for $700 you have a convertible laptop running whatever you want to put on it.
The problem is with these hybrids, they have NEVER sold well. They SHOULD, but they don't, they're too heavy. The newest generation of hybrid PC tablets will have dockable keyboards like the Surface tablet or the accessory keyboards for iPad, and these will reduce weight severely. Combine that with the Windows 8 idea of having an app store, and how Ubuntu already has Software Center, this will be THE TIME to introduce a hybrid or convertible.
I'd recommend skipping anything not mainstream and go with using i3/i5/i7 3rd gen processors. The i3-3217UE would be a great entry-level $600ish unit, and the i5-3317U and 3427U could be midrange around $800-$1000, and you could offer the i7-3517U/UE or even the i7-3667U as a power user model for $1200-$1500. These are all 17 watt CPU's designed for "hybrids" and "laptops", and thusly would be excellent for this use. This way you have strong computing power and no one wanting for more. They can use the screen as a tablet, or dock it to a keyboard (with an additional battery, maybe a CD/DVD drive) and use it as a laptop.
Don't waste your time, or time will waste you...
