Drivers from WIN

hello, there.

I was considering using Xubuntu for a couple of days on my new ThinkPad E430, but i have one serious problem. I need the fingerprint reader working (annoying young brother), but i can't figure out if the drivers will work on Xubuntu (or any ubuntu) as well. Thanks for help.

Many things work automatically in Ubuntu unlike in Windows where you need to install drivers. Drivers for windows will not work on ubuntu.

BTW, there may be other solutions that you don't know of to stop your younger brother. If you describe the problem your younger brother is creating, I may able to be offer an alternative solution.

Why not try a "Live CD/DVD" of xubuntu first.

This will show if the fingerprint option is viable without change to your current system.

Drivers can be a real weakness in Linux distros, especially for special hardware like fingerprint readers. Laptop providers are known to required special drivers for their special hardware. If the device doesn't work right off, it could be very difficult to get drivers for it -- as these often have to be compiled from source code to bind with the kernel. Unlike with MS Windows, it's not a simple matter of sticking in a CD and running an installer.

And, as other have said, Windows drivers don't work in Linux.
