Can't install ATI proprietary drivers in 12.10. Unity is Missing

works for me too.

I had an update yesterday then after reboot I got black screen. I cant get Ctrl Alt F1. What I did was hard reset then press "shift" many times. Then go to the recovery console and access terminal. Use the code bgood86 adviced, system go go go!

I have been experiencing issues with the driver install too. I am missing unity / gnome desktop but do have dual head (2 monitors displaying)

Does anyone have a resolution that could work for me.

I tried re-installing xserve-xorg-core and gnome. Using an ATI5700 series card.

Spoke too soon: I corrected the issue using

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

restarted then selected GNOME as the desktop environment

everything is working.
