I've been up against this with a few different Android devices. It's maddening.

If you have WiFi try using Airdroid instead of bothering with trying to get MTP to work.

I ran into this with my Nexus 7 which only supports MTP as well. Quite frustrating since my first gen Kindle Fire and every Android phone I've owned is seen as a standard USB Device, so I'm confused on why they think removing that was a good idea.

At least on the Nexus 7 I've heard that rooting it and installing some third party software will allow it to work as a standard USB device so I'm sure the same is true for the Kindle Fire HD.
