the update manager will notify me when 12.10 is released. i have not upgraded this way before out of my fears(always made clean installs)

i have never had a problem and have upgraded that way since 6.06.
wait about a week AFTER 12.10 has been installed b4 u upgrade

12.04 is a LTS release,so it won't offer to upgrade to 12.10,which is not a LTS release.
You have to make in a change in the Settings Page to Normal Releases before it will offer the upgrade.

If you have unofficial Gnome 3.4 themes many may not work or display properly . There are only a hand full 3.6 themes available. Disable any PPAS if you have them because they may not be compatible. In update manager settings set to check for all available releases. Good Luck !
