You mentioned that it was an update and not an upgrade. Please confirm. The difference is extremely important.
If just an update, then we have somewhere to start from because you at least have the command prompt.
Make sure you are logged in. Then type:

sudo service lightdm restart
It is unlikely that your xsession will start, but what we are looking for is the error output. If it does start, then we will hunt for the reason in comfort. If not, and the error output goes by too fast, then type:

sudo service lightdm restart 2> ~/Desktop/errors.txt
then:

nano ~/Desktop/errors.txt
and let's see what we've got.
