Your GUI which makes your desktop beautiful is also what makes your desktop crawl instead of run. I would recommend #! (Crunchbang) or another OpenBox based distro, or Xubuntu or another Xfce based distro would be better than Cinnamon, Unity, MATE, or KDE.

what you need is gentoo. I had the same artifacts on my X1270 netbook until I put gentoo on it but an Athlon64 1.2Ghz x1 processor is TOO SLOW for updates/anything. Surprisingly, even though my card isn't supported by fglrx, using ubuntu with fglrx solved the artifact problem and is surprisingly fast considering my hardware limitation. Your hardware specs should be lightning quick with any DE, so make sure your swap is activated and TRY before you BUY. run a liveCD for a few days first.

If you're using Ubuntu or an Ubuntu derivative, you can always check if the Xorg-edgers PPA has a newer version of the video drivers you need. You can also try a newer kernel from the kernel devs PPA.

You don't *have to* run a rolling release distro to get newer packages; most distros provide some means of obtaining bleeding edge versions of packages, you just have to learn how.

I have installed Manjaro Linux and I love it. It is very quick and works like a charm. I would probably say that I will stick with it for awhile.

DisappearingOak; you are already getting a lot of advice here, I've got to admire anyone
who has tried as much stuff as you have.

you could use chakra, but install another gui (desktop environment) within, and see how it is. i would recommend xfce, its got options, and can be made to look like a lot of different things. but you could also try cinnamon etc too.

open the package manager or app centre that chakra has (dont know what it uses), and find the desktop environment you want to try.

Chakra is geared towards KDE. If you want XFCE then look at Manjaro which is based on Arch with their own repos. They take the Arch stable repos and move them to their testing repos and once happy they move them to the Manjaro stable repos. Manjaro specialises in XFCE where Chara is focussed on KDE.

Just a few days ago I installed Bodhi Linux on an old laptop, and I'm THRILLED with its speed. This laptop was running KDE (Kubuntu 11.04) about as fast as frozen molasses, but now it's flying.

    Hi guys,
It seems after a lot of searching, I've found why there's so much sluggishness and across so many distros even on my powerful hardware. It's beacuse of bugs. Apparently with KDE with desktop effects, there's a bug about a repaint issue that causes extremely jerky effects on my system. I reported it to the devs after finding out that with Show FPS effect on, animations were super-smooth but otherwise jerky. With Gnome Shell, 3.2 was fine, but in the newer Gnome Shells, there's a bug with the water animation that causes scale animation to be very jerky. That's been reported by others as well. I didn't want to use Enlightenment, it runs fast, but it has other problems with various bugs, even in the final release, which I have reported to devs. As for now, I'm using Linux Deepin 11.12.1 with 3d gnome shell, which runs absolutely smooth and fast. So I'm content for now and also waiting for their new version which features a brand new desktop environment which looks good from their preview videos.
