I'm pretty sure the PS3 expects the drive to be formatted with NTFS or FAT32.

You are forced to use FAT32, nothing else works as far as I know.
There may also be problems with current high capacity drives. Some users claim they can't get the PS3 to "see" any partitions over 500GB in size.
The PS3 can only see partitions formated with FAT32, and their own format (I do not know what that is).
The PS3 can see external HDD with more than 500 GB. I have connected my 2 TB drive to it, and it can see it easily.
Only problem I have heard of, is with internal HDD with more than 500 GB. The reason for that is probably because there is a problem with their format.
