how can i make my video conversions not drop frames

i'm using a dvd/divx player to feed into a menu board. i have a new video and i'm trying to convert a .mov file into a xvid .avi

the trouble is the video looks terrible after i convert it.

using winff (front end for ffmpeg), i have a preset with the following options

    Code:
    -f avi -r 29.97 -vcodec libxvid -vtag XVID -s 1280x720 -aspect 16:9 -maxrate 1800k -b 1500k -qmin 3 -qmax 5 -bufsize 4096 -mbd 2 -bf 2 -flags +4m -cmp 2 -subcmp 2 -g 300 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 48000 -ab 128k -ac 2
2 pass doesn't seem to make a difference.

    using ubuntu studio 12.04 x64

    any advice would be appreciated.

Install mediainfo, or just use ffmpeg, and give us the properties of original video.

    sorry for the lag.

Re: how can i make my video conversions not drop frames

    Original

    1280x544 23.976 AVC 48k AAC

    other ones

    704x384 29.970 XVID 48K mp3

In what format do you need transcoded file to be?

command you gave sets size to 1280x720, but you have 704x384?

    Also you changed framerate.

Try to keep the same everything you can, sepcialy the framerate. Also you changed aspect ratio of the picture in the command. And in presented files.
Aspect ratio of 1280x544 is not the same as 704x384 nor 1280x720.

Re: how can i make my video conversions not drop frames

it needs to be xvid/mp3 for the dvd player (coby dvd298 ) i have to read it as a divx file. i'll play with some settings and see if the original framerate will work.

update: i tried with switches -sameq and then with -r 23.976 -s 1280x720, the dvd player refuses to play them.

Re: how can i make my video conversions not drop frames

ffmpeg will simply either drop or duplicate frames, as in your case, to achieve the desired output frame rate. Do not use -sameq: sameq does not mean "same quality".
