After upgrading from 11.04 to 12.04, Wireless works intermidantly...

Have tried many times in the forum to get help with this issue to no avail... After prodding a bit, it seems to be a somewhat common issue with internet working intermittantly and then needing to be reset. This is followed by the network card thinking that there are other networks in the area with names similar to mine but with odd spelling variations that include asian characters, etc. Here is the description of the issue. Below it are the code entries and responses for the general info:

Started with 10.04. Had a Linksys E1000 wireless router. Was told I needed to buy a Penguin Wireless N USB Adapter (actually an Atheros card.) off of the ThinkPenguin website. I did, but I couldn't get things working until 11.04 came out. After that all issues were solved and things worked great. When 12.04 came out, I thought about upgrading and the problems it could create, but finally figured it wouldn't be the Ubuntu Team's plan to move backward, so I upgraded. Things worked fine for a little while and then web pages stopped loading.

If I reset my internet connection in the Ubuntu menu in the upper right hand corner (I log off, then log back on) things work fine again for a good 10-15 minutes.

It would seem that this problem occurs faster on sites that are trafficing more info, for example, it takes a youtube video about 5 minutes to stop loading, or I simply open another youtube video at the same time and the browser cannot connect to it until I reset the connection. A regular site containing only reading information with limited animation doesn't give me trouble as fast. As I am typing this I have 2 other sites open containing only readable info, and yet I am having no issues navigating the forum, but eventually I will have to reset the internet connection.

The people at ThinkPenguin seem to think the wireless card is malfunctioning, and that it isn't a result of the new upgrade to 12.04. They also said that the card I bought from them gets more complaints with my modem than its cheaper sister version, the Penguin Wireless G USB Adapter. I bought the Wireless N Adapter(atheros) because they initially told me it was faster than the Wireless G Adapter and was only $10.00 more. Now I'm being told to buy the cheaper one too. That's a bit annoying, so I figured I'd check the forum before shelling out more cash. It isn't a lot of money, but I'd still like to know a little more before I buy another Wireless card.

Updating the package files? It doesn't finish doing so, althoug it seemed to help a litlle, in fact, restarting the system usually helps a little but eventually the internet stops and I have to turn the wrieless off and on again.

please explain how to fix this if you can...

You already seem to have the correct driver for the chip (carl9170). However, as per Linux Wireless website, you "may" need to manually get the correct firmware (http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/...ar9170#caveats).

So please follow the above link to get the details, and go to the "official device firmware" section (it is closed-source, but 'ready-to-use' official fw from atheros) to get the correct firmware for your adapter. Then copy (overwrite) them to you /lib/firmware/ directory (those already existing must be the open-source versions, and may be suffering from some bugs yet to be rectified).

Reboot, and hope for the best. Good luck!

Okay, a few issues;

1. In the link you provided the:

was listed as: 404 Not Found

Is there another site where it can be taken directly from atheros or somewhere else?

2. I got the files listed as:
two stage: legacy firmware
ar9170-1.fw, ar9170-2.fw

I copied those over the original ones and (although they claimed to copy %95 for the first one and %100 for the 2nd) I got this message:

ar9170-2.fw: Error opening file '/lib/firmware/ar9170-2.fw': Permission denied

I can't undo the overwrite so I will restart and see what happens so far.

A big sorry for being an utter stupid and sending you in the wrong direction.

I just realized that this driver (carl9170) doesn't use those firmware at all! It uses carl9170-1.fw, which again, already exists in the default packages. But before trying anything else, I think you should read this page thoroughly, especially if you are going to use n-channel, as the compatibility and performance of this particular chip is not very promising - to say the least. Some excerpts:

Users should be aware that these devices might go mad from time to time. Because these BUGs seem to occur too randomly to be identified, but happen often enough to be really annoying, the firmware and driver come with some convenient features to keep the overall downtime at a minimum and without requiring any user intervention. But as mention before there is a caveat: The user has to setup everything properly!

It's worth mentioning that the chip was designed, produced and sold in the early 802.11n-draft period. Compatibility will always be an issue.

the device is not suitable for any serious 802.11n setup.

If you wish to try the firmware provided on that site (there's a minor size difference, so i assume it is different from the one already existing in /lib/firmware), please backup the current one:

cd /lib/firmware
sudo mv carl9170-1.fw carl9170-1.fw.bak

then download this one from the same page: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Dr...=carl9170-1.fw

Copy it to your /lib/firmware directory:
(assuming the downloaded file is in your 'Downloads' directory)-

sudo cp carl9170-1.fw /lib/firmware

and reboot. Afterwards, as recommended on the same page, load the driver with nohwcrypt=1 parameter:

Then try to connect. If it seems better this time, we'll make it permanent.

That's okay, because when I copied the two files into lib/firmware

two stage: legacy firmware
ar9170-1.fw, ar9170-2.fw

I basically overwrote the existing ones of the same name, and even though it said there were errors, when I reset, everything seemed to work right. We will see if it stops in the next few days, I was able to update about 512 update files which have been building up over time. strangely 17 of them would not update, I have to investigate this issue further. I don't know why overwriting two files you said were the wrong ones would cause it to work better unless it reset some kind of glitch.

Unless it's only because I reset the computer that it seems to be working, in which case it will eventually stop working I will keep an eye on it the next few days

Thinkpenguin later informed me that the Wireless N is difficult to work with, (shrugs) they didn't tell me that when I first bought it.

Let me see what happens over the next few days and I'll let you know if it stops working again. If it stops I will try your other directions.
