Xubuntu follows Ubuntu and drops alternate images

"the Xubuntu team has decided to drop the alternate images at least for 12.10 due to the lack of manpower", source: http://goo.gl/4pYDC.

If Xubuntu team is lacking manpower why don't concentrate only on LTS releases and make them better, more stable and more aesthetic?

    Re: Only LTS Xubuntu releases?

One good reason is that once released, it doesn't get any updates other than security fixed or major bug fixes. This is for stability of the distro that users are relying on.

So the only way to release new features, cosmetic improvements and the like is to release a new version. This is in fact what 12.10 is doing.

    Re: Only LTS Xubuntu releases?

Ubuntu itself is dropping alternate images from 12.10 onwards for the same reason. Xubuntu must follow closely the path of Ubuntu otherwise the developers would make lots of extra work for themselves.

The aim is for Ubuntu to have RAID by using the Ubiquity installer. Apparently most of the components are in place but there will not be time to get desktop RAID working before the release of 12.10. So, the task will not be complete until 13.04.

There has been a lot of discussion of this in the Ubuntu+1 section of the forum.

For anyone who is interested, the 12.04 alternate images will still be available. So, if 12.10 does not give you the RAID that you want as part of the install then, it is a case of installing 12.04 + RAID using the alternate image and then upgrading to 12.10.

    Regards.

    Re: Only LTS Xubuntu releases?

The Ubuntu and Xubuntu projects had to cut somewhere.

Not everyone is content with the LTS releases. LTS releases are two years apart (that is, April of even numbered years) and a lot of changes occur in two years.

Anyway, if I have a need for the alternate image I usually decide to use Debian instead.

Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.

No support requests by PM please.

Most of the functionality of the Alternate Install CD is still available, only from the 'Minimal Install CD' which loads all packages from the repositories during installation. You do have to know your CLI-fu, but the capability will still be there.

There is a need to correct the wrong information in this thread title:

    http://xubuntu.org/news/quantalbeta2/

There will be a 12.10 Xubuntu. There is one already. It is only the Alternate images that are being dropped.

    Regards.
