These commands turn the screen off
also my screen is not dimming on idle like it is set toCode:xset dpms force standby xset dpms force off

switching monitor to suspend from standby under extended got it to act right
still not autodimming....

On my Ivy Bridge powered computer I have to use the settings under "Display Power Management" (after enabling it) on the "Advanced" tab of the "Screensaver" settings in XFCE to get proper dimming and suspension of the display.
Actually I think I need to do that on a laptop with an ATI-card too.
