Disk Usage Analyzer slow showing usage

On my two machines one with Ubuntu 12, the disk usage analyzer is very slow, really hangs in showing usage. For example I have had the analyzer open for an hour, and it still does not show usage. The other folder sizes take some time to show.

The laptop is a HP Pavilion laptop dv6, the other is a custom machine which is a few years old. Other programs are not slow. Both machines are showing low disk space errors, but even prior to these messages showing they were showing that.

    Any ideas?

How much RAM do you have?
Do you have many, many, many small files?

3.7 GB. I should mention these are both dual boot Windows 7 machines. Hmm, not sure why I would have many, many small files more than anyone else? How would I define this? The Ubuntu install does not have many files beyond the relatively new installation. The Windows partition maybe? Not sure why it would, my files are mostly a few dozen podcasts, some software <50MB downloads?
